2023 UCSF Library Artist in Residence, Katina Bitsicas presents "Projection Mapping Magic: A Workshop on Crafting a Projected Community Quilt."

Combining Katina Bitsicas' expertise in projection mapping with her passion for sharing this knowledge to build community, this event showcases the process and digital tools used to create a projection mapped video display, with the UCSF Library as our canvas. Projection mapping, among other new media tools, is used in Katina's project Glyphosate Dreams which she is creating while in residence at UCSF. Projection mapping is a technique that is utilized across many industries such as sporting arenas and theme parks, but many times isn’t easily identifiable by the viewer. This workshop will shed some "light" on the process of projection mapping and the magic that can happen with the flip of a switch.

Katina will guide participants through the process of selecting and editing their video, conforming the video to the library's architecture, combining multiple video clips into the same projection field, and finally displaying the videos together for a public presentation of the projection mapped community quilt onto the UCSF Library.

What to bring to workshop

Participants are asked to bring a short 30-second video clip to the workshop (phone recordings are fine) that they would like to incorporate into the projected community quilt. After the workshop, there will be a question-and-answer segment to encourage open dialogue and conversation while viewing the community's artwork.

Register below to participate in the workshop. This workshop is open to the UCSF community. If you are a DPH employee, UCSF alum or retiree, contact the Makers Lab to register for this event. Participation in the workshop is limited to the first 25 registrants; however, viewing the projection mapped quilt in front of the UCSF Library is open to the public from 6:30-7pm and does not require registration.
