Unix in Practice for Digital Health Humanities: Working with Archival Collections Dataset Files

Unix in Practice for Digital Health Humanities: Working with Archival Collections Dataset Files Online

This session is designed as a follow-up to the DSI workshop Intro to Unix, with support for learners interested in programming foundations for digital health humanities research.

From 12-1pm we will open up for new learner questions and troubleshooting relating to getting started with installing and running a Bash Unix shell to work at the command line.

Starting at 1pm, we will provide a walkthrough demonstration on running a Bash Unix shell to work at the command line with archival collections dataset files. Through this session, you will get familiar with common, useful commands to help you locate and extract downloaded archival collections dataset files, identify file characteristics, review and evaluate file contents using grep and find, and create new files from them. We'll also go over applying basic looping and scripting in Unix to automate repetitive tasks.

Please feel free to join either or both halves of this session!

Preparation: Participants will find it helpful to have taken the DSI Intro to Unix workshop, though can alternatively have reviewed materials related to that session independently, even cursorily as this session will support learners who are very new to working at the command line.
