Command-Line Basics for Digital Health Humanities Research

Command-Line Basics for Digital Health Humanities Research Online

This workshop will teach attendees the technical and conceptual skills required to use the command-line interface on Mac and Windows machines.

Often, in digital research, it is assumed that scholars picking up a new coding language or computational tool already have a grasp on how to navigate and operate the Terminal—for Mac users—or the Command Prompt—for Windows users. Many scholars, especially those from humanistic or non-computer science backgrounds, lack a basic training with this foundational computational technology, causing them to shy away from tools and platforms that use command-line prompts. This workshop is designed to help those scholars feel more comfortable working with those digital tools.

This workshop will provide basic instruction in how to read, navigate, and run simple commands in the Terminal or Command Prompt. In addition to this, attendees will learn about how this tool can be used for simple textual analysis queries. Attendees will develop the foundational aptitudes required to pursue more complex digital research.
