Finding Archives as Data for Digital Health Humanities: Industry Documents Library Collections Online
“Archives as data” provide researchers with opportunities to interrogate archival collections at scale using digital tools and methods. Researchers interested in Digital Health Humanities approaches will learn about sourcing archival collections data from a number of UCSF’s health sciences archives collections, including those from the Industry Documents Library which encompasses documents from the tobacco, opioid, food, chemical, drug, and fossil fuel industries, all of which have impacts on public health. This is one of two sessions that will orient participants to archival research methods used to work with both collections and datasets derived from them. UCSF archivists will share highlights from digital collections, showcasing how these have been and can be used for computational research across a range of disciplines.
A companion session, Exploring Archives as Data for Digital Health Humanities will be offered on March 20, and will focus on AIDS History Project collections, UCSF University Archives, and other collections and data exploration approaches to help researchers in getting familiar with these datasets.
